Week 2 - Overwhelm: This is a Wave, And It's Going to Pass

Jun 10, 2023

It was early Summer and my first day back on the water. I wanted to impress Tami, so I attempted to go big on the wakeboard. I landed the trick…but something snapped. It was my femur—broken in half. As I laid in the water waiting for rescue, waves kept coming from other boats passing by…each wave caused excruciating pain. There happened to be a nurse in our boat, and with each approaching wave, she’d calmly say: “This is a wave, and it’s going to pass.” That’s how overwhelm works, right? It feels like it’s gonna last forever. But it doesn’t. It comes and it goes. Even in sobriety waves of overwhelm still come. During those waves, are you able to BE STILL AND DO NORMAL…and remember your real purpose in life and recovery?

Brian Frank will join me as our Guest Storyteller. Brian’s been sober for more than 11 years now. He was smooth sailing for awhile, until a wave came crashing in recently. I asked Brian how he’s staying centered and sober through all of it. His response: “I’m not doing anything at the moment, God is. A good warrior knows to listen to the General…when to fight, and when to be still.”
